Importance of Proprioceptive training in Basketball

First of all we need to understand that what is proprioceptive training? And why it is important in basketball?  Why many Basketball Trainer use these exercise for training? Find your all answer in this article.

what is Proprioception

Proprioception is the ability to sense the position, location, orientation and movement of the muscles and joints. It is very important actions and it is very useful for everyday routine. But in athlete life it the most important thing especially in athletic movements that require special coordination, such as racket sports and basketball in which we have to coordinate the whole body with an implement (racket or paddle) and a mobile external (ball).

In short Proprioception is the position in which the parts of our body being "blind". Proprioception can be trained in many forms. Before starting Proprioception training you must know about Fitball and Bosu(Both-sides-up). In recent years we have seen the emergence of new methodologies in the training and conditioning, as the functional training. Many trained performing exercises on unstable surfaces as Swiss ball (fitball) or BOSU (Both-sides-up) for increasing activation or abdominal area is commonly known as the core.

Proprioception Training

Proprioceptive training helps to improve strength, coordination, balance, reaction time and their work is essential in preventing injuries.  In these exercises force impact on neuromuscular factors (nervous system) improving inter-and intramuscular coordination, so important in the movements that occur in team and individual sports.

There are many proprioceptive exercise which is used as basketball workouts in training. Like one-leg squats with lateral hops, one-leg balances with perturbations, rocker-board lunges, one-footed heel raises, forward-backward leg swings with knee flexed are some examples of exercises. You can also create your own exercise. In these exercise you didn't need more load you can perform these exercise with bodyweight only but it become more intense due to imbalances. Some of the exercises are really demanding and requires a good physical condition.

Basketball is the game which need high stamina, speed and endurance. During game you have to take some unstable jump or any trick which could unbalance your body, we find that multiple kind of unbalance jump or tricks can cause serious injury, at this time proprioception ability works. But Proprioception exercise decreases the occurrence of injuries during sports. Almost all Basketball Trainer recommend these exercise for basketball player.
